CAMPANA JAZZ FESTIVAL WOWS AGAIN!

The 2007 edition of the Campana Jazz Festival was a huge success! With large crowds and almost double the bands from last year, this year's edition was a wonderful experience for all involved. Special thanks to the parents and students whose volunteer hours made for yet another fine representation of the Amador band program in the music education community. Andrea Holmquist and Besty Pickert are to be thanked for the large task of coordinating parent and student volunteers for the event-all went smoothly! A HUGE thank you to Carl and Marilyn Palowitch, festival coordinators, whose love and dedication to the music program and the festival was evident in the nearly flawless day presented to those who competed and attended. My deepest thanks to the Amador band family-you made me proud!

OFFICE SUPPLIES! Thanks to those that brought in much needed office supplies. The band office is most in need of 8 1/2" x 11" reams of paper for the copy machine and printer. Feel free to send in with your band student.

Volunteer to Help at the Magic of Music
Thom Kato

It's coming soon! The 3rd annual Magic of Music gala fundraiser is March 31st. There are many opportunities to help out at the event. Some of the jobs can be done while attending the event; others might require 'full time' attention during the evening. All of the jobs include having a crew of student helpers (student opportunities will be posted soon in the Band Room).

I hope you can all attend this fantastic event, and bring your friends and family too! But if you'd rather help out behind the scenes, or want to help during part of the evening and still enjoy the fun, the food, the dancing, and yes, the auctions, please contact me at thom.kato@comcast.net or at (925) 548-1634.

Wanted: Artwork for Marching Band DVD case
Steve Ethier

Great news! We will have a Marching Band DVD available for purchase at some point in the not too distant future. This DVD contains both the 2005 and 2006 Championships performances plus other extras. In order to finish off this project in a sorta professional manner, I am looking for someone who would be willing to do the artwork for the DVD case. I'm an engineer by trade so I doubt the band family would want an analytical person like me doing artwork, otherwise we'll end up with some squares and triangles and I'll call it a day. :-)

I have the DVD cases from the 2003 and 2004 seasons to show what has been done in the past.

Having nice artwork for this DVD will make it a prized heirloom (chuckle!) for our children.

Please contact me at slethier@pacbell.net if you are willing to help me with this project.

Campana Wrap-Up
Marilyn and Carl Palowitch

Dear Families and Friends of AFM,

The 32nd Annual Campana Jazz Festival is now history and the memories are wonderful, even if a bit soggy. We arrived at 6:30 in the morning in a downpour, four cars already lined up at the gate to drive onto the campus to setup the welcome areas for visiting Directors and Adjudicators. Twenty-four bands later, the celebratory Awards Concert kicked-off in the Amador Theater to a full house.

And the winners are -

High School A
1st Place: Folsom I
2nd Place: Northgate
3rd Place: Moreau Catholic

High School B
1st Place: Folsom II
2nd Place: Folsom III
3rd Place: Valley Christian

Middle School
1st Place: Valley Christian
2nd Place: Walnut Creek
3rd Place: Pleasanton Middle

Over $7000 in scholarships were awarded to the outstanding musicians of the day. Mr. Jim Campana, for whom the festival is named, was on hand to make his own congratulatory remarks at the Awards Concert.

Many thanks are in order to our AVHS Jazz Band Directors, Mr. Grantham and Mr. Aubel, whose commitment to Jazz education throughout the year is highlighted in this annual event. We thank them and their students for continuing the tradition of jazz music and congratulate them for a wonderful festival!

We thank all the AVHS music students who supported the festival in a variety of jobs. You jumped right in to fill the needs and we thank you all!

Special thanks to Andrea Holmquist and Betsy Pickert for taking on the huge task of coordinating all of the parent and student volunteers! Their organized and hospitable approach resulted in a strong and committed team on Saturday.

We’d also like to heap praise on Cindy Gehl, who has been quietly supporting us administratively since last fall. She handled the Scholarships, from acquisition to presentation, and helped in many other areas. All we had to do was ask. Thank you, Cindy.

We’d like to congratulate all of the AFM families for stepping up to support the Campana Jazz Festival. The Volunteer forces were large and great and ever so enthusiastic. Applause to the parents of Jazz students, who nearly met the 100% participation goal. We realize it is impossible to have 40 families all available on the same day, but you know, we were as close as could be! Wow! We need to keep that commitment to the Jazz programs going and growing.

And to all of the parents who do not have students in the jazz program, or for that matter, those of you who do not even have students at Amador! Your support at the Festival is overwhelming. You are really helping us spread the word that music education is alive and well in Pleasanton! Thank you!

We list here for your appreciation and congratulations the parent volunteers -
