Congratulations to the AVHS winterguard on turning in a spectacular performance in Dayton, Ohio at Winterguard International Championships. The 18 member guard turned in a dazzling and memorable performance, but due to a tough slot in prelims, did not advance to semi-finals. Special thanks to Jamie Henderson, Jennifer Silva, Toni Shook, and Danny and Kathleen Pesusic for making the trek cross-country with the team! Go Dons. CMEA band festival is coming up and all concert band students are participating. This is also an event that the AVHS band hosts each year. An itinerary is posted on-line under the concert band link. All three groups perform on Friday after school at CSU East Bay in Hayward. Each band member is required to work a 2 hours volunteer shift at the festival on Friday OR Saturday. Jazz band members and juniors (in consideration of prom on Saturday) will be given first priority in signing up for an assignment. All parents are welcome to attend the performances on Friday.
There is no charge. Mr. Grantham is in need of just one more parent volunteer to assist for this event. Please contact him at jgrantham@pleasanton.k12.ca.us if you can help! Donation needed! The band room is out of paper! If you have an extra ream of paper around the house and can spare to the band, please send it in with your band student. It will be put to good use making copies of our upcoming marching band music (which is almost done!) Joint PUSD band event planned-mark your calendars! On May 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Harvest Park Gym there will be a musical and visual sight to behold! The all-district 5th grade superband, the wind ensembles from Hart, Pleasanton, and Harvest Park Middle Schools and the wind ensembles from both Foothill and Amador will be performing in a joint concert. The event is free and all are encouraged to attend to share in the depth of talent we have in Pleasanton! The Magic of Music was a huge success, earning nearly $38,000. Many thanks go to many people for all of the volunteer hours that went into producing a truly magical evening. Thank you in particular to Angela Adkins for her vision, dedication and commitment to leading a fundraising event of this magnitude. Our program is first-class in every way, including our very special fundraising efforts. On behalf of the students, thank you AFM! Magic of Music – Angela Adkins
The second annual Magic of Music took place last Saturday and I think we can say it was a huge success.
After expenses we cleared just over $38,000. This was nearly a 20% increase on last year!
There were many many people including the students who worked hard to make this the success it was. However, special thanks must be given to the Magic of Music committee who planed and worked for many months to make this happen.
Cindy Gehl put together a great team to coordinate and bring in donations and they did a magnificent job, which meant that we had many wonderful items for everyone to bid on. Thank you Cindy.
Chris Smith and Linda Either worked very hard at getting the word out to the local community, getting in touch with alumni members and the icing on the cake, having the Diablo magazine send photographers who took many of the attendees photos which will appear in their next publication. Thank you Chris and Linda.
Paulette Callahan took care of all the ticket sales and made sure everyone got to sit where and with whom they wanted, no small feat. Thank you Paulette.
Steve Kirch coordinated all of the data base to record the bidders and make out invoicing. He even did this knowing he would be unable to attend the event. He put together a great team who worked the entire evening, Richard and Lois Grotegut and Nalanda and Phil Bowman, as well as Karen Swift who handled check out. Thank you Steve and your team.
Dianne Jones and Roland Ellingson took care of the silent auction transportation and set up and many many other tasks in the lead up to the event. Thank you Dianne and Roland.
Debbie Asbury, Toni Shook and Donna Mc Williams who set up and created the decorations in the ballroom to make this a truly magical evening. Thank you Debbie, Toni and Donna.
Thom Kato provided such a comprehensive group of volunteers and spent time training them and creating ways to make their job run smoothly. It made the evening seem effortless, right down to the guests having their winning items being carried out to their cars. Thank you Thom.
Carol Kato got double the amount of advertising in this year which mean that all of the printing costs for the catalog were covered. Thank you Carol.
Sheri Baldwin organized the wine toss which was tremendous fun and now knows more about wine than she ever cared to. Thank you Sheri.
Kim Portman and Joni Hirth, as always took care of the student needs. Kim coordinated the RA's and Joni provided nibbles for all the students to eat. Thank you Kim and Joni.
A very special thank you to Jazz B and Jazz A who entertained the guests so professionally under the direction of Mr. Grantham and Mr. Aubel. Thank you Mr. Grantham for the wonderful band program you have made this and to Mr. Aubel.
Many many people worked, supported and contributed to this event and made it what it was. Once again thank you to each and everyone of you who contributed. We cannot do it without all of you.
Thanks Angela Adkins Magic of Music Chair. Magic of Music – Thank you! - Thom Kato
The 2nd Annual Magic of Music was a great success! Many many thank you’s to everyone who attended, to those parents who worked so hard to make the event happen, and to the students who entertained us and helped with the event. Most of all, I want to thank Angela Adkins for her vision, inspiration, and tireless work in creating this wonderful event. There was a great team of volunteers, both students and parents, but Angela's vision and leadership were the key to making this annual event a smashing success. Thank you, Angela for leading the way! Please join us to help Foothill’s Band - Thom Kato
You may have read the article in Monday's Tri-Valley Herald about the damage to Foothill High's instruments resulting from marching in the very rainy Rose Parade (link to article at http://www.insidebayarea.com/search/ci_3692948). They're estimating over $10,000 in damage to school instruments. We would like to help them deal with this unexpected expense. We are collecting donations to help pay the cost of instrument repair. I think it would be great to have a check from AFM delivered to the Foothill boosters. If you are so moved, please send your donation to me or Roland Ellingsen by April 24th. Our addresses are listed below. Anything you can do will help; many small amounts will create a sizeable donation. We'll combine the checks and see if we can deliver at their next booster meeting. Of course you can also donate directly to the Foothill Boosters, their address is in the article. Please feel free to call me or Roland with any questions.

I emailed Angela Mogannam, Foothill Band's booster president, after reading the article. My email and her reply follow. ----------------------- Hello Angela, My name is Thom Kato and I'm the president of Amador Friends of Music, the Amador High School music boosters. I read the story in this morning's Herald and am so very sorry to hear about the extent of damages to your instruments. Watching the parade on TV I was amazed that it still took place, but very proud that Foothill was there to represent Pleasanton! I want you to know that Amador has you in our thoughts and if there are things we can do to help you we will. I'm not at all sure what we can do, but please let me know and we'll give it our best try. You can reach me at this email, or at the numbers listed below. Thank you so much. It is a shame that this happened, but we were so proud to be there, we would do it all again. I had the privilege of marching with them and I can't even describe how it felt. I wish the same for Amador. We do need to stick together. I really appreciate your gesture of kindness. I'll keep you posted. Angela ------------------------------
