Earn $$ for Your Student Account:
Sleep Train Pavillion for 2008 Season
Cecilia Melby

This year's concert season starts on May 5th. There could be as many as 30 concerts this year. Should be lots of opportunity for folks to earn money toward their Student Accounts/ London bills!

Our team runs the Corona Beer Hut, selling bottled beer, draft beer, wine and sodas. For each event we typically provide 2-3 people who are entirely responsible for manning the booth. We are responsible for accounting for the beginning and ending product inventory and all cash sales. We then receive 5-7% of the proceeds from the event, in addition to any tips collected. 10% of our earnings are applied to the band General Fund, and the remaining earnings are allocated to the student accounts of the parents working that event. The tip money is pooled and distributed to the entire volunteer pool to help adjust for any events where earnings are low. Last season volunteers averaged $100 per event once the tip money was allocated. Week-day events usually require the group to leave Pleasanton around 4:00 PM for a 5:00 reporting time. We typically are home by about 11:30 PM. Weekend events are more variable, sometimes requiring a full day/evening (full day events paid out at $150).

Interested? In order to qualify for this opportunity, you are required by the Pavilion to take a 3 hour training class in Concord that covers the regulations for selling alcohol at this venue. There is also an internet option for training that costs $40 per person that you can elect to pay for yourself (Concord on-site training is free). The training is good for 3 years - Parents of Seniors please take note, your TIPs card may be expiring before the season ends and you may need to take the class again. In addition, everyone is also required to take a short on-line training course that covers the Hospitality aspects of running a booth.

Training in Concord is usually offered in April/May - usually with very short notice! Please email Cecilia.Melby@Clorox.com if you are a new participant this year and I will add you to our current volunteer list and notify you of the training dates once available. Once you have completed the necessary training, you will then be eligible to volunteer.

Do you have a special dinner you prepare? Are you handy with tools or
paint? Are you a computer wizard or some type of instructor?

might donate a round?

Tables at MoM for Freshman Parents!
Jereen Gilbert

A Special Note to Freshman Parents,

If this is your first year at AVHS and you are like me ; you are probably just coming down from the whirlwind of Marching Band season. I have been amazed, and at times honestly overwhelmed, by the talented staff and supportive parents here at AVHS. What a great opportunity for our kids!

As a result I feel myself becoming a parent cheerleader/fan and looking forward to future interactions with this wonderful group of kids, staff and parents. To that end we are lucky to have an event at the end of the year that will allow us to get to know each other better as we head toward 3 more exciting years together. I am organizing some tables for freshman parents at our "Magic of Music" event so we will have the opportunity to meet and visit with one another. So if you have been hesitating about whether to come alone or to even come at all - don't worry - come sit with us and we will have a great time ! When you buy your tickets simply indicate you would like to sit at a freshman table or call me at 462-6633. See you all there !

Civics Arts Concert
Marilyn Palowitch

Looking for something to do over spring break? Go to a great show, right here in Pleasanton!

Civic Arts Presents Don Lewis & Young Expressions on Saturday, March 29, 2008, 8:00 pm at the Amador Theater. This energetic, interactive and uplifting show incorporates instrumental music, voice and dance. Student performers include Amador students Ben Donlon, Ariel Thexton, John Palowitch and alum Max Loh and Foothill students Sam Lee and Kelly Sabiel.

"The show's Amazing Voyage overture takes the audience on a journey of transformation, connecting the past to the present and setting the tone for the show. The production will feature individual performances as well as several different ensembles of students," says Don Lewis, who will accompany the students and provide the "thread" that ties the show's various acts together. "There will be dance and vocal solos and several mixes of artists in collaborative pieces that blend their talents. For instance, Max will sing "Wait for Me" his own vocal composition, accompanied by student instrumentalists. Everyone will perform in the finale, of course, and Brad Kinney Productions will add a multimedia dimension with the projection of images and theatrical lighting."

Don Lewis is a professional performer, synthesizer pioneer and educator. As a student at Tuskegee Institute, he accompanied and sang with the Tuskegee Chorus and played for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Freedom Rallies. Lewis has had a distinguished career in recording and live performance and has worked with such greats as Quincy Jones, toured solo and with the Beach Boys, and has composed for major symphony orchestras.

Following the performance, the audience is invited to attend a reception hosted by the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council in the Amador Valley High School library to meet the artists and view student visual arts.

COST:
$10, $14 & $18 adults; $6, $10 & $14 children & students; online at www.civicartstickets.org , by phone (925) 931-3444 and at the Amador Theater Box Office Mon. - Fri. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., two hours prior to the performance. Group discounts available.
