Thom Kato called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
1. Welcome and acknowledgements Thom Kato Thom thanked Kimberly Ansell and her uniform crew for checking in and taking care of over 200 band uniforms.
2. Band Director’s report Jon Grantham CONCERT BANDS · Each student is required to work two volunteer shifts split up over the Winter guard show (2/3), Campana Jazz Festival (2/10) or the Magic of Music (3/31). Each student is additionally asked to work a short shift at the CMEA band festival in Hayward on 4/27-28. · Upcoming dates: 1. Wind Ensemble-2/17 @ CBDA All-State Conference (all day-bus) 2. Wind Ensemble-3/2 @ Chabot Wind Band Festival (afternoon, evening-car) 3. Wind Ensemble/Wind Symphony-3/26 @ Amador Theater (evening) 4. Wind Ensemble-4/18 @ PUSD Band Festival (HPMS evening) 5. Wind Ensemble/Wind Symphony-4/21 @ UOP Band Festival (all day-bus) 6. All concert bands-4/27-28 @ CMEA Band Festival Hayward (evening Fri, all day Sat-car) 7. All concert bands-5/22 @ Collage Concert, Opus II Amador Theater (evening) 8. Wind Ensemble-6/15 @ Graduation, Fairgrounds (evening-car)
· Congratulations to the following students and these recent accolades in local, regional, state and national honors groups:
The following Amador band students on earning spots in the Alameda County Honors Band: Heather Deagen, Alexene Farol, Devin Maguire and Karl Schmidt.
The following students earned spots in the All-Northern (regional) honor band: Sarah Andersson, Karissa Finn, Ryan Fornoles, Erica Miranda, John Palowitch, Jay Ryoo and Teddy Won.
Competing against over 1,500 applicants from across the state, these Amador band students earned All-State Honors Band spots: Ryan Fornoles, Erica Miranda, Jay Ryoo and Spencer Sussman. John Palowitch earned All-State Jazz Honors for the third year in a row.
Also congratulations to John Palowitch on national honors and recognition as an upcoming member in the Grammy Band and the Bands of America Honor Jazz Band.
These are the highest number of spots Amador has ever earned in each of these groups.
JAZZ BANDS · Upcoming dates: Folsom (itinerary coming out next week on Monday). Approx. time frame will be 12:00 report to AVHS, home 9:30 p.m. Campana is 2/10. All jazz students are involved as performers and volunteers.
MISC. · Can anyone remove the refrigerator from the band locker room? · Several stands and locker doors that need repairing. · Anyone interested in redesigning/updating the band website?
3. AFM Board Members’ Reports
a. President Thom Kato i. Spring Budget and Fees
Thom opened the floor for questions regarding changes to the Spring Budget and announced the winter/spring fees. · $75 for Concert Band Members · $50 for both Jazz A and Jazz B Members · $725 for Winter Guard Members · $460 for Winter Percussion Members b. VP Fundraising Dianne Jones Dianne discussed the plans for the Magic of Music Fundraiser that will be taking place on March 31, 2007. She expressed the importance of having all families in band involved in one way or another since this is our only major fundraiser. Dianne and the group discussed how fun the event is to attend and encouraged all to buy tickets and to invite friends and family. She also touched on the following points. · Plans are going well and there has already been one committee meeting with both old and new volunteers. · Parent Packets will be mailed out at the end of the month. Most questions about the event should be answered in the packet materials. Donation forms, ticket forms, etc. will be included. · We need a parent volunteer willing to coordinate the tear down after the event. Contact Dianne if you are interested. · Janice Maurer will be in charge of parent donations. · Ann Fischer will be in charge of student donations. She will be talking to the students in their band classes on February 20th. She will follow up with an email to inform parents about what their children have volunteered to donate.
c. VP Transportation Roland Ellingsen Roland asked everyone if they knew the significance of the following numbers….18,11,5,1. Answer: 3 years ago 18th was our place at championships, 11th place 2 years ago, 5th place this last season and 1 stands for #1 band director!
d. Student Accounts Pam Sangiacomo Pam announced that she has the current band statements with the winter/spring fees and will be mailing them out soon.
4. Announcements Thom Kato a. Thom reminded everyone that there are two easy ways to offset fees: paper scrip and escrip. Joan Laursen, our paper scrip chairperson, pointed out that in December she processed $27,000.000 worth of scrip and over $27,000.00 worth in November. b. Toni Shook asked for some baked goods for the concession sales at the Winter Guard Show on Saturday, February 3rd. Individually wrapped baked goods can be brought to the show on Saturday or dropped off in the band room on Friday or Saturday. c. Andrea Holmquist asked for some non-jazz parents who are willing to give the jazz parents a break while their children are performing during Campana. These volunteer spots would only be 20-30 minutes in length.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:49 p.m.
